FOR MANY YEARS, interior designer and hotelier Wilbert Das lived in a very small house in Trancoso, a pretty beachside town in Brazil’s Bahia state. His cottage sat next to those of his closest colleagues, all ranged around a courtyard garden, and when Mr. Das set out to design himself a new house, the cottage informed the new home’s layout and interiors.
